Modern automatics can't be overwound. A slipping clutch disengages once the mainspring is fully wound.
Older manual wind watches were more vulnerable to this, which is where the myth comes from. Those movements had no safeguard built in.
Wind gently and stop when you feel resistance. Do that, and you'll be fine.
