How to Clean a NATO or Canvas Watch Strap

Fabric watch straps absorb sweat and hold dirt in the weave. They are easy to wash, but they need a full rinse and enough drying time.

Remove the strap first

Slide a NATO strap out from under the spring bars or remove a two-piece canvas strap. Keep the watch itself away from the wash water.

Hand-wash it

  1. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water.
  2. Add a small amount of mild laundry soap or dish soap.
  3. Soak the strap for a few minutes.
  4. Work the fabric gently with your fingers or a soft toothbrush.
  5. Clean the holes, keepers, and folded sections.
  6. Rinse until the water runs clear.

Do not use bleach, fabric softener, or very hot water. Aggressive machine washing can bend hardware and fray heat-sealed edges.

Dry it flat

Press the strap in a clean towel, reshape it, and let it air-dry. Do not use a dryer or radiator. Reinstall it only when fully dry.

Keep the hardware clean

Salt and sweat collect around metal loops and buckles. Brush those areas gently and rinse well.
