A bracelet that slides around the wrist makes even a good watch feel wrong. Removing a link can fix the fit, but the job gets frustrating fast if you do not identify the bracelet hardware first.
Before pushing anything, turn the bracelet over and look closely.
Identify the link system
Most adjustable bracelets use one of three systems:
- Friction pins: small arrows on the underside show the direction the pin should exit.
- Pin and collar: a pin passes through a tiny split collar hidden inside the center link. The collar is easy to lose.
- Screws: one or both ends have a visible slot. These need correctly sized screwdrivers, not a pin tool.
If there are no arrows, slots, or obvious removable sections, stop and check the manual. Some folded bracelets and specialty systems require a different method.
Tools that make the job easier
- A bracelet holder or padded block
- A pin pusher sized to the hole
- A small watchmaker's hammer
- Precision screwdrivers for screw links
- Fine non-magnetic tweezers
- A tray or light-colored cloth for tiny parts
Do not balance the bracelet on a table and attack it with a nail. Poor support bends pins and scratches the links.
Removing a friction-pin link
- Open the clasp and decide how many links need to come out.
- Remove links from both sides of the clasp when possible so the clasp stays centered under the wrist.
- Place the bracelet in the holder with the arrow pointing down.
- Align the pin pusher with the pin and tap lightly until the pin moves.
- Pull the pin the rest of the way with tweezers.
- Separate the link and save every part.
- Reconnect the bracelet, inserting the pin opposite the arrow direction.
- Seat the pin flush with light taps.
Watch for the hidden collar
On pin-and-collar bracelets, a tiny tube may fall from the center link as the pin comes out. Without that collar, the reinstalled pin will not hold. Note exactly where it sits before separating the links. Work over a tray so it cannot disappear into the floor.
Removing a screw link
Use a screwdriver that fills the slot. Too small and it will slip, chewing up the screw head and scratching the bracelet. Apply steady pressure and turn slowly. Some bracelets have a screw on one side and a fixed head on the other. Others require two screwdrivers at once.
If the screw will not move, do not force it. Thread locker may be present, and a watchmaker can remove it without damaging the link.
Check the fit before finishing
The bracelet should stay in position but still allow normal wrist expansion. Try it on before putting away the tools. Use the clasp's micro-adjustment for the final few millimeters if available.
