The words on a dial or case back tell you what a watch was designed to handle when it left the factory. They do not prove that an older watch is still sealed today.
Water resistance depends on the case, crown, crystal, gaskets, and condition of the watch. One weak point is enough to let moisture in.
Look for the rating
Check the dial and case back for markings such as 30M, 50M, 100M, 3 ATM, 5 ATM, or 10 ATM. The manual may provide a more useful activity chart.
If there is no water-resistance marking, assume the watch should stay dry. That is especially important with vintage watches and watches with unknown service history.
Depth ratings are laboratory ratings
A 50-meter marking does not mean you should take the watch 50 meters underwater. The test is performed under controlled static pressure. Real use adds movement, temperature changes, soap, impact, and aging seals.
Use the manufacturer's activity guidance for the exact model. As a conservative rule, low ratings cover incidental splashes, while swimming needs a purpose-built watch with an appropriate rating and sound seals.
Inspect the obvious weak points
- Make sure a screw-down crown threads smoothly and closes fully.
- Check the crystal for cracks, chips, or a lifted edge.
- Look for corrosion or gaps around the case back.
- Watch for condensation under the crystal.
- Confirm pushers are not loose or damaged.
Do not operate the crown or pushers while the watch is wet unless the manufacturer specifically designed them for underwater use.
Age changes the answer
Gaskets harden and lose elasticity. A watch that was water resistant years ago may not be water resistant now. Opening the case for a battery change or service can also disturb the seal if the gasket is damaged, reused poorly, or not seated correctly.
If water exposure matters, have the seals inspected and the watch pressure tested periodically. A dry pressure test can check case integrity without putting the movement in water.
What a pressure test tells you
A professional test measures whether the case deforms and returns as expected under controlled pressure. It is the closest thing to a current answer. A passed test confirms the watch met the test conditions at that moment. It does not make the rating permanent.
If moisture gets inside
Condensation, a fogged crystal, or visible droplets require immediate attention. Do not wait for the watch to dry on its own. Water can damage the movement, dial, hands, and electronic components. Stop using it and take it to a watchmaker.
