Best Automatic Watches Under $500

The best automatic watches under $500 are built around a movement any watchmaker already knows: Seiko NH35, NH36 or NH38, or a Miyota 8215, in a stainless steel case, ideally under sapphire. This guide is for anyone who wants a real mechanical watch without spending a month of rent on it. The price band here runs from about $170 to $350, and every pick is in stock at One Good Watch as this is written. We only recommend watches we can actually ship, so if one sells out, it comes off the list.

What to look for

Movement first. Under $500 you should insist on a named Japanese caliber. The Seiko NH35 and NH36 hack, hand-wind, and can be serviced or swapped almost anywhere. The Miyota 8215 is less glamorous but equally dependable. A movement with no name attached is the first warning sign. Second, the crystal: sapphire is realistic at this price and worth holding out for on a daily watch, because mineral glass picks up desk scratches within a year. Third, size. Most of the watches below sit between 38mm and 41mm, which covers the majority of wrists. Check thickness too, since an automatic with a rotor is always thicker than a quartz watch in the same case.

Water resistance is the last filter. A manufacturer rating of 50m handles rain and hand washing. A 100m or 200m rating means you stop thinking about it. A 20mm lug width is the easiest size to find straps for if you want to change the look later.

Our picks

CADISEN Sapphire Integrated-Bracelet Automatic, 40mm

The value pick. A Miyota 8215 automatic behind a sapphire crystal, in a 40mm stainless steel case that is 12mm thick, on an integrated tapering steel bracelet. Manufacturer-rated to 10 BAR, so swimming is fine. The grooved black dial with applied luminous markers looks like a far more expensive watch. $169.99.

Pagani Design YS021 Automatic Watch, 41mm

For someone who wants something to look at on the dial. An open-heart window shows the balance wheel, with a moonphase-style subdial beside it, in a 41mm 316L stainless steel case under sapphire. Manufacturer-rated to 100m. Black or blue dial, each on a matching strap. $199.

Utime White Open-Heart Automatic Watch, 40mm, Japanese NH38

The dress option. A Japanese NH38 automatic with a small open-heart cutout on a white textured dial with crystal-set markers and a fluted bezel. The 40mm steel case is 11.5mm thick and comes on a 20mm steel bracelet. Mineral glass and a 3 BAR rating, so keep it out of the pool. No date, which keeps the crown simple. $209.

1GW Hero 39mm Textured Face Automatic

Our own 1GW line, and the watch the line was built around. A Japanese NH35 automatic in a 39mm polished steel case, 12mm thick, under sapphire, with a frosted pale-blue textured dial that shifts to silver in the light. Manufacturer-rated to 200m on a 20mm black leather strap. Date at 3. $329.

Carnival Octagon Seiko NH36 Automatic Watch, 41mm

The integrated-bracelet sport look without the integrated-bracelet price. Seiko NH36 automatic with day and date, a 41mm stainless steel octagonal case at 11mm thick, synthetic sapphire crystal, and a steel bracelet with a butterfly clasp. Manufacturer-rated to 50m. Gray or black dial with luminous markers. $339.

1GW Green Professional Diver 200m Automatic

A real tool diver that does not wear like a slab. NH35 automatic in a 38mm brushed steel diver case, 14.2mm thick, with an AR-coated domed sapphire crystal and a 200m manufacturer rating. Green sunburst dial with applied lume markers, on a 20mm black rubber waffle strap. Best pick here for smaller wrists or anyone who swims. $349.

How to choose between them

If you want the most watch for the least money, buy the CADISEN and spend the difference on a second strap. If you want a dial that does something, the Pagani Design YS021 or the Utime open-heart cover the sport and dress ends of that. If you want a watch that goes in the water without a second thought, the 1GW Green Professional Diver is the only 200m diver on this list, and the 1GW Hero is the same movement in a dressier case with the same 200m rating. The Carnival Octagon is for anyone who likes the integrated-bracelet look and wants day and date on the dial. None of these need a battery, and all of them use a movement you can get serviced.
