A mechanical watch may run at one rate on the wrist and another when left dial-up, crown-down, or in a different resting position. This is called positional variation. A small change is normal because the movement is a physical system affected by gravity and friction.
Position changes the balance system
The balance wheel turns on a very fine staff. Grand Seiko explains that changing the watch’s position changes where that shaft contacts other parts, which changes resistance. The balance and hairspring can also behave slightly differently when gravity acts from another direction.
Real movements contain tiny manufacturing and adjustment differences. The hairspring may not expand with perfect symmetry, pivots may experience different friction, and amplitude can vary with power. Watchmakers regulate multiple positions to reduce these differences, but they do not disappear completely.
How to check it sensibly
- Set the watch to a reliable time reference.
- Wear it normally for several days and record the total gain or loss.
- Repeat with a consistent overnight resting position.
- Compare averages, not a single short reading.
Citizen recommends judging mechanical accuracy over a week or roughly ten days instead of focusing on one day. Wear time, winding level, temperature, and activity all change the result.
Can resting position help?
Sometimes an owner finds that one overnight position offsets part of the daytime gain or loss. That is a practical observation, not a repair. If the rate changes dramatically, becomes erratic, or worsens after a shock, the watch may need demagnetizing, regulation, or service.
Do not chase a single perfect reading. The better question is whether the watch stays within a stable range that suits its specification and use. Consistency is often more informative than one unusually good day.
