Lume is the light-storing material painted onto a watch's hands, markers, or dial that glows in the dark so you can read the time without a light source. It works by absorbing light energy while it's exposed to sun or a lamp, then slowly releasing that energy as a visible glow once the lights go out.
How the Glow Actually Gets Charged
Most modern lume uses a photoluminescent compound, commonly a strontium aluminate-based material, that gets charged by absorbing photons from any light source, sunlight, a lamp, even a phone flashlight held close for a minute. The brighter and longer the exposure, the brighter and longer the glow afterward. That's why a watch left on a windowsill all day will glow more intensely at 2am than one that spent the day in a dark drawer. The glow fades gradually over several hours as the stored energy releases, rather than switching off all at once.
Why Some Watches Glow Brighter Than Others
The brightness and duration depend on how much lume material is applied and its quality, not just the brand name on the dial. A thick, generous application of a good compound will out-glow a thin, stingy application of the same material, which is why some watches known for lume performance are specifically designed with oversized markers and hands to hold more of the compound. Older vintage watches often used radium or tritium-based lume, which glowed differently and, in radium's case, is no longer used for safety reasons. If you care about how a watch performs in the dark, it's worth checking not just whether it has lume, but how much surface area is actually coated with it.
